  William Smethergell (1751-1836) was a London organist, viola player and composer. His works included seven keyboard concertos and various instrumental and orchestral works.

  A manuscript set of accounts for the "musical society held in the Vicar's Hall, Lichfield" in the early 1740s creates an atmospheric picture of the activities of the hundreds of musical societies in Britain at the time. Expenditure was in equal measure on Ale, Ye Woman and Handel's Overtures.

  According to legend, the bite of the tarantula could only be cured by violin music (hence, tarantella). The article describes how this tale was embellished as it was copied by author after author right up to the Royal Physician himself.
