J S Bach: Genius or Journeyman?
A 2-day course with Dr Tim Rishton at Lancaster University, Tues 18 & Weds 19 March 2008, 10 – 4.Does J S Bach deserve his great reputation? In his own lifetime, he was often considered quite old-fashioned, but he is now believed to be one of the greatest composers of all time. We shall study a selection of his prolific output, from suites and masses to fugues and sonatas, as we debate his reputation, both then and now, and reassess his importance in the development of western classical music. The course aims to show how a greater understanding of Bach's works can help us really enjoy his music.
